#1 Stone 1 (not plated) (margins just a little irregular at left center
and top right) tied to yellow paper cover by the Warrington, Fla CDS 15
JAN (1862). From the well-known Chapman Correspondence addressed to Mrs.
Kate L. Chapman Care W. S. Chapman, Talladega, Ala. Accompanying the
cover is a period valentine
which is on an exhibit page from the Dr.
Howard Green Collection described as original to the cover. The
valentine is certainly period and quite nice but most likely is
not original to this cover because of the mid January date of the
cover. Very clean cover. Ex-Howard Green Collection.
Kate
Lettice Chapman (1839-1881), the addressee, was the wife of William
Smith Chapman (1833-1868) who at the time of this cover was the 1st
Lieut of Co D 1st Ala Inf. The
regiment was organized in Pensacola in April 1861 and remained in the
Pensacola area until March 1862. On 3/16/1862, Lieut Chapman was
promoted Capt and transferred to Co G 31st Ala Inf
when that regiment was organized at Talladega, Alabama. Capt Chapman
resigned 9/26/1862 with no further service. In 1863, he relocated with
his family to Southern California. and worked as a citrus farmer.
The
cover is from Lieut Chapman to his wife as there are other covers in
the correspondence from this time period in the same handwriting. So
the notation "Care W. S. Chapman" is a little confusing as it does not
appear on the other covers that I have seen. However, Lieut Chapman's
father was also named W. S. Chapman, so that may be to whom the
notation refers. Could find no information about Lieut Chapman's father
other than the name. |
