Stampless cover with the Mariana, FLA CDS (dateless) and handstamp PAID (no rate) Type A. Coarse brown paper cover addressed to Dr. James J. Philips, Battleboro, North Carolina. Very clean cover. Seven Type A covers listed in the Brigg's Census. The addressee, Dr. James Jones Philips (1798-1874), was a physician and planter in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. The correspondence between Dr Jones and his cousin Ethelred Philips (1801- 1870), a physician and planter located in Mariana, Florida, is extensive. This cover is from that correspondence. The Jones family papers are archived at the University of North Carolina at Chapell Hill.
