Stampless cover with the Quincy, Flor CDS and handstamp PAID 5
Type B 23 DEC (1861). This cover is the listing cover for the Type B
PAID 5 illustration in the current CSA Catalog. Light coarse brown
paper cover addressed to Mrs. Thomas Jones, Thomasville, Geo. Unsigned
notation on the reverse by VanDyk MacBride "Very fine - scarce marking
(new listing next Dietz Catalog)." Very Fine. Only 2 Type B covers listed in the Brigg's Census.
The addressee,
Lavinia Young Jones (1810-1891), was the wife of Thomas Jones
(1802-1869), a wealthy Thomas County, Georgia, planter.
Their plantation was known as "Greenwood." The original
Greenwood plantation home built in 1830 partially burned down in the
1960's but was rebuilt and is a favorite location for movies
featuring plantation homes. They had a son, James Young Jones
(1827-1877) who owned a plantation in Jefferson County, Florida, and
who served in the Florida State Legislature and may have been the
sender of this cover. Jefferson County, Florida, is just across the
state line from Thomas County, Georgia. Two sons served in
the Confederate Army -- Thomas William Jones (1839-1894) Pvt Co B
Cobb's Georgia Legion Infantry, and Henry Francis Jones
(1841-1864) Lieutenant and Adjutant Cobb's Ga Legion Cavalry
Killed-in-Action 6/13/1864 at the Skirmish of White Oak Swamp (Va)
during the Siege of Petersburg. |
