Type C 26 JAN (1863). Coarse brown paper cover with a light pencil
address to Capt W. E. Smith, Albany, Ga. Clean appearing cover. Six Type C covers listed in the Brigg's Census.
The
addressee, William Ephraim ("Tete") Smith (1829-1890), was a Georgia
planter, lawyer, and politician. He entered service 4/28/1861 as a
Lieutenant in Co E 4th Ga Inf
and promoted Captain 4/28/1862. He was severely wounded at King's
School House (Va) also known as the Battle of Oak Grove which was the
first of the Seven Days Battles of the Peninsula Campaign 6/25/1862.
His wound resulted in the amputation of his right leg. He was
discharged from service 8/1/1862 due to his wound but recovered
and was elected in late 1863 as a Georgia representative to the Second
Confederate Congress. After the war, he continued the practice of law.
He was elected to the US House of Representatives 1875-1881 and served
later in the Georgia State Senate. This cover is from the time after
his discharge from the army while he was home in Albany, Georgia,
recovering from his amputation. |
