Howell Cobb was a major
political figure of the day. Former Speaker of the US House of
Representatives and former Governor of Georgia and former Secretary of
the Treasury under Buchanan, Howell Cobb was a founder of the
Confederacy and served as the President of the Secession Convention in
1861 as well as President of the Provisional Confederate Congress until
he resigned to join the military reaching the rank of Major General in
September 1863. He
was also a serious candidate for the Confederate presidency but was
