Outgoing Blockade Cover from Savannah, Ga., to Rome, Italy, via Charleston, Nassau and London.
From the well-known and well-documented Locke Correspondence which is
known to have originated in Savannah, Ga. Addressed to Madam J. L.
Locke, Rome, Italy (Italian Street Address). Period
docketing indicates the letter (#38 in the
correspondence) was dated 3 OCT 1862 and was received in Italy 8 DEC
1862. The Locke Correspondence is known to have used Barring Brothers
in London as their agent in Europe. The
envelope traveled under separate cover with other letters from Savannah
via presumably Charleston and Nassau to London as that was the usual
route. The blockade runner that carried the cover out of
Charleston is not identified.
In London, Barring Brothers removed the envelope from the separate
cover. A London mark in red is on the front of the cover dated 26
NOV
(1862) with a London red "PD" (Paid) mark and red "1/10" (1sh 10d as
that was
the double weight rate Britain to Italy) indicating that all postage
had been
paid. Barring Brothers received the cover in London and sent it on to
Italy through the regular British postal system via France. Two French
transit marks on the front of the cover dated 27 and 28 NOV (1862) two
more transit marks on the reverse and a partial strike of the Italian
receiving mark. The cover is listed in the Walske Census of Other Outbound
Blockade Mail from the CSA as BO-Oth-2. Minor sealed top back flap tears. Ex-Kaufmann. CSA Certificate 2007. |
