the Walske census originated in Berlin, and most likely this cover also
originated in Berlin. Very clean appearing cover with a little toning
on the back and missing most of the top back flap. Ex-Agre,
Ex-Kaufmann, and a Molesworth note on the reverse. Two CSA Certificates

The Ella and Annie was a 747 ton side-wheel steamship constructed in 1860 in Wilmington, Delaware. The original name was the William G. Hewes. The
steamship operated as a blackade runner out of New Orleans until the
city was captured by the Union and then the steamship was relocated to
the Carolinas. At some point the name was changed to the Ella and Annie. The Ella and Annie
continued to run the blockade in the Carolinas until captured by the
Union 11/9/1863 while attempting to enter the port of Wilmington NC and
incorporated into the Union Navy as the USS Malvern. After the
war, the steamship was sold at auction and reverted to its original
name and entered the commercial trade until she was wrecked off Cuba in
1895. |
