BLK34 Incoming Blockade Cover to Richmond, Virginia, via Wilmington NC from the well-known and well-documented Gray Correspondence addressed to Mrs. E. A. V. Gray Care of Mann S. Valentine Esqr, Richmond, Virginia. Wilmington NC 5 PAID Integral CDS 16 APR (1864) and manuscript "12" due for 10c inland CSA delivery + 2c ship fee. The use of the Wilmington Integral 5 PAID postmark dates the cover to 1864. The handstamp "SHIP" mark usually seen on incoming Wilmington blockade covers is missing on this cover as its use was discontinued after February 1864. There are no other postal markings, but the Gray Correspondence is known to have originated in England. Cover was either carried privately across the Atlantic or most likely under separate cover through forwarding agents. This cover is listed in the Walske-Trepel Census as BI-WM-73, but the blockade runner that carried the cover into Wilmington is not identified. Part of top back flap missing. Small edge repair at left center, but still a very clean cover. Ex-Oswald, Ex-Kaufmann. CSA Certificate 1988. $1,800.00
