CSA #13 (margin just clears on the left) tied at the left by an enclosed grid which is consistent with an Army of Northern Virginia Field Grid
cancel which appears to be ANV-03 used in 1865. The oatmeal cover
appears to be made from heavy recycled paper and is addressed to Mrs.
Thos Cowan, Pittsboro, N. Carolina. On the reverse is pasted a period
blue paper piece cut from most likely the original letter with the
dateline "Thursday Evening" Feb 16th 1865."
This letter dateline is consistent with the use of the ANV-03 Grid but
no way to confirm if this is from the original letter. Research shows
that there was a Thomas Cowan (1803-1883) living in Pittsboro at this
time with his wife. Therefore, the cover was most likely sent by a
relative serving in a NC Regiment in the ANV but am unable to identify
the sender. Could benefit from further research. Very Fine. |
