Stampless cover (soldier's due) with a full strike of the small double circle Little Rock, Ark CDS and manuscript "Due 5" 8 JUN 1862. Folded Letter addressed to Miss Susan E. Shropshire, Granview, Johnson Co., Texas. Endorsed at left "B. N. Shropshire, Far(r)ier in Company A, Commanded by Capt Sanders, Col Sweets Regiment, Johnsons Brigade." The
letter is a short poem titled "Forget-Me-Not." The
notation indicates that it was composed and written by the soldier to
his niece. There is one internal fold split, a small unobtrusive edge
tear at top center, and the bottom of the lettersheet has been cut off.
But the letter is complete with nothing missing. Very clean cover with
a very Fine overall appearance. Two former collector owner's handstamp
initials on the back - E.H.W. (Ernest H. Wyche) and J.R.S.
(unidentified). The cover is also Ex-Kaufmann.
Benjamin N. Shropshire entered service as 2nd Lieut of Co A 15th Texas Cav
3/1/1862 commanded by Capt (later Major) Valerius P. Sanders. The 15th
Texas Cav was dismounted in July 1862 and fought the remainder of the
war as an infantry unit. George H. Sweet (1830-1911) was promoted
Colonel of the regiment 4/1/1862. The regiment was captured at Arkansas
Post 1/11/1863 and exchanged a few months later. It is interesting that
the soldier identifies himself in the endorsement as a "farrier" which
is someone who cares for the horses (particularly the horses hooves).
Not a position occupied by an officer. So the assumption is that he may
have lost his commission and been reduced to the ranks. But there is no
further record. |
