Stampless cover with the small single rim Hamburg, Ark CDS and manuscript "Due 10"
15 AUG. Coarse brown paper cover addressed to Mrs. Mollie Slemons,
Monticello, Drew Co., Arks. The cover went through without a soldier's
endorsement, but the cover was sent by Col W. F. Slemons of the 2nd Ark Cav
home to his wife. Minor reduction at the right where opened and light
staining at bottom center and upper right, otherwise a very clean
appearing cover.
William Ferguson Slemons (1830-1918), a lawyer by profession, was first Major and then Colonel of the 2nd Ark Cav.
In 1863 and 1864, he commanded a brigade in the Trans-Mississippi but
did not receive a promotion as Brig-Gen. On 10/25/1864, Col Slemons and
most of his unit were captured at the Battle of Mine Creek (Linn
County, Kansas during Gen Sterling Price's Missouri Campaign). Col
Slemons was confined as a POW for the rest of the war first at
Johnson's Island (Ohio) and then at Rock Island (Illinois). He was the
last prisoner to leave Rock Island at the close of the war because he
refused to take the Oath of Allegiance, and General Grant paroled him
back home to Arkansas. After the war, he resumed the practice of
law in Monticello and served as a US Congressman from Arkansas
1875-1881. He also served as an Arkansas State Court Judge.
