Stampless
cover “Osceola Ark Nov 25 (1861) Paid 5” all in manuscript with an
added handstamp “Due 5” of the type used in Memphis, Ten Type G. The
“Due 5” handstamp was added in transit as the cover was apparently
underpaid most likely secondary to weight and not distance. Orange
paper cover with full Military Address to Capt Elliot H. Fletcher Jr
Care of Lt Col Marmaduke, 1st Arkansas Battalion, Hindman’s Brigade,
Bowling Green Ky. Bolling Green Ky was under Confederate occupation at
this time. Other than some minor staining at the upper left and a
slight reduction at the left not affecting anything, the cover is very
clean and shows absolutely excellent postal use with a significant
military history.
The 1st Ark Inf Bat at this time was part of
the army occupying portions of Kentucky. The unit was redesignated
12/61 as the 18th Ark Inf and then in early 1862 as the Confederate 3rd
Inf with John S. Marmaduke as the Colonel. Marmaduke was later
promoted Brig-Gen and Maj-Gen and was the one who killed CSA Brig-Gen
L. M. Walker in a duel over a personal matter later in the war. A short
biography of Gen Marmaduke (1833-1887) accompanies the cover. The
addressee, Capt Elliot H. Fletcher along with his 16 year old brother,
were both Killed-in-Action at the Battle of Shiloh 4/6/1862. |
