CSA #1 Stone 1 Position 42 (92) (somewhat dry printing but 4-Margin with a large lower sheet margin) tied by a very nice strike of the small double circle Mobile, Ala CDS 11 APR 1862. Addressed to Mrs. R. T. Simpson, Florence, Alabama. Minor corner edge wear, otherwise Very Fine.
Lieut
Robert Tennet Simpson (1837-1912), a prominent lawyer from Florence,
Alabama, was the most likely sender of this cover home to his wife,
Margaret Jane Collier Simpson (1841-1908). Lieut Simpson began service
in April 1861 as a private in the 4th Ala Inf and took part in the Battle of First Manassas. He was very quickly commissioned 2nd Lieut in the 1st Ala Artillery Battalion and soon
promoted 1st Lieut. This unit was part of the Army of Mobile and places
Lieut Simpson at Mobile and Fort Blakely at the time of this cover. He
served later as the AG (Adjutant-General) to General Liddell's Brigade
located at Mobile for a time. Late in the war, he was promoted Captain
and commanded a company in the 63rd Ala Inf
organized in early 1865 at Mobile. He commanded his company through the
1865 Siege of Spanish Fort and the Battle of Fort Blakely. He
surrendered his command at Fort Blakely 4/9/1865 and was held as a POW
with his command at Ship Island until taken to Jackson, Ten, and
paroled in May 1865. After the war, he practiced law in Camden, Ala,
and Florence, Ala, and served in the 1880's in the Alabama State
Legislature and the Alabama State Senate. |
