He was very quickly commissioned 2nd Lieut in the 1st Ala Artillery Battalion and soon promoted 1st Lieut. This unit was part of the Army of Mobile and places Lieut Simpson at Mobile and Fort Blakely at the time of this cover. He served later as the AG (Adjutant-General) to General Liddell's Brigade located at Mobile for a time. Late in the war, he was promoted Captain and commanded a company in the 63rd Ala Inf organized in early 1865 at Mobile. He commanded his company through the 1865 Siege of Spanish Fort and the Battle of Fort Blakely. He surrendered his command at Fort Blakely 4/9/1865 and was held as a POW with his command at Ship Island until taken to Jackson, Ten, and paroled in May 1865.
