Stampless Soldiers DUE cover with no originating postmark and a handstamp (Due) "5"
in a circle. The handstamp "5" has been described as "blue" but could
be a degraded black. Origin of the "5" handstamp not determined as it
is rather a generic mark. Addressed to Miss L. C. Hollis, Havana,
Alabama. Endorsed "Private J. T.
Hollis, 20th Alabama, Regiment." College Cover with an overall design
(main hall college building) in gray for the SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY in
Greensboro, Alabama. Greensboro, Ala, did not use this type
of "Due" handstamp so is unlikely to be the origin of the cover. This
is quite a scarce college cover design. The cover has a 2002 CSA
Certificate, but the original certificate is no longer with the cover.
A copy of the certificate is included. The certificate merely says
"Genuine." Very clean cover. Ex-Richard Hall, Ex-John Walker.
Private
Josephus Hollis (b1841) from a prominent Greene County, Alabama,
planter family appears on the roster of the 20th Ala Infantry. In 1861,
the unit was assigned to the Department of Alabama and West Florida
until joining the Army of Mobile in January 1862 and moving to East
Tennesee in May 1862. The unit was surrendered at Vicksburg, exchanged,
and served the rest of the war in the Army of Tennessee. Could find no
service record or any other information on Private Hollis. According to
the Federal Census of 1860, the addressee was Private Hollis' sister,
Lucy C. Hollis. Cover could benefit from more indepth research on the
Hollis family. |
