AL464 | Turned Cover - Alabama and Louisiana -
Very heavy coarse brown paper cover which appears to be homemade. Part
of back flaps missing. Not folded for display. Very clean cover. First Use (inside) - CSA #7 Horz Pair (4-Margin) tied by the small double circle Mobile, Ala CDS 2- FEB 1863. Military Address to Lieut R. Greene, Crescent Regiment, Butte a la Rose (Butte La Rose in St. Martin's Parish), La. Second Use (outside) -- Stampless Soldiers DUE cover with the small single rim New Iberia, La CDS and handstamp DUE (no rate) 29 MAR (1863). Addressed to Dr. S. S. Herrick, Mobile, Ala. The two handstamp "10" strikes are not from New Iberia but are Mobile, Ala handstamps used as receiving marks Type F. Endorsed at top left "From Lieut R. Greene Jr, Co F, Cresct Regt La." Period docketing at left. Lieut R. Greene Jr (1831-1880), an 1854 graduate of Dartmouth College, served in the La Crescent Militia Infantry (New Orleans) and later in the La Consolidated Crescent Regiment achieving the rank of Captain. After the war, he relocated to Texas and is buried in Houston. No further information. Dr Stephen Solon Herrick (1833-1906), the addressee of the second use, attended Dartmouth College and obtained a Medical Degree from Tulane in New Orleans in 1861. During the war, he entered service in the Confederate States Navy and served as an Assistant Surgeon in Mobile. After the war he relocated to California in the 1880's. Most likely a friend of Lieut Greene from Dartmouth College days and from New Orleans. |
