Dabney
Herndon Maury (1822-1900) was a lesser known Confederate general. He
was from Fredericksburg, Va, and was an 1846 graduate of West Point who
had distinguished service in the pre-war US Army. At the beginning of
the war, he left the US Army and entered Confederate service as a
Colonel and Chief of Staff to General Van Dorn in the
Trans-Mississippi. He was subsequently promoted Brig-Gen in March 1862
and Maj-Gen in November 1862. In 1862, he assumed command at Mobile and
ably defended Mobile until the end of the war. After the war, he
founded the Southern Historical Society and served for four years as
the US Minister to Columbia. He died in Peoria, Ill, and is buried in
Fredericksburg, Va.
Could find nothing on the addressee, J. J.
Stewart. The address suggests that he was an AAG member of General
Maury's staff in Mobile, but he is not listed as an official member of
the General's staff nor could I find his name on the army rolls. He may
have been a volunteer unofficial member of the General's staff. |
