CSA #4 (two singles) Stone 2 with left stamp plated as Position 35 and the right stamp shows the Gooseneck variety of Position 25
(CC 4-2-v7). Both stamps are 4-Margin but with a bit of edge gum
toning tied together and to the cover by two strikes of the small
double circle Mobile, Ala CDS
12 OCT (1862). Addressed to Ernest Landry Care of Chas D. Barbot Esq,
Charleston SC. Very clean cover which appears to be a homemade
adversity cover with
just a little edge wear and light foxing. Nice use of the gooseneck
stamp variety on cover.
The addressee was from a prominent Louisiana family and was serving with the Lousiana Battery of the 18th SC Heavy Artillery
with the Siege Train Charleston Harbor defenses. Barbot was a prominent
Charleston family with ties to the Louisiana Landry family. Extensive
research on the family and on other items in the Landry Correspondence
have proven that this is mail that was smuggled out of Union Occupied
New Orleans (cover dated 6 months after the Fall of New Orleans) and
then posted in Mobile. The New Orleans Landry covers with this cover
used as an illustration are explained in detail in the Collector's Guide to Confederate Philately Second Edition on Pages 235-236. CSA Certificate 2009 confirming Genuine
Smuggled Mail. |
