Stampless Soldier's Due Cover with the small double circle Mobile, Ala CDS with an early 1862 date and handstamp (Due) "5" Type E. Addressed to Mr. James H. Green, Mars Post Office, Bibb Co., Ala. Endorsed at left "J. C. Mathers a Corporal in Capt N. N. Clements Comp 1 Ala Betalion." APS Certificate 1989. Very Fine.
Can
find no record of an Alabama soldier named J. C. Mathers, but that is
not unusual. Capt N. N. Clements can only refer to Newton Nash Clements
(1837-1900) who is listed as a Captain first in the 26th Ala Inf and then Captain of Co F 50th Ala Inf and
later promoted Lt Col of the regiment. After the war, he served in the
US Congress as a representative from Alabama. Based on this
information, the endorsement is a bit confusing. But the unit in the
endorsement may have been a state unit or a reserve unit early in the
war and not a regular Confederate unit. |
