USA Star Die with the Montgomery, Ala CDS 31 MAY 1861 Last Day USA Used in the CSA. Addressed to Mrs. Mollie E. Austin, Elkton, Giles County, Tennessee C. S. Confederate States). From Confederate Alabama to still Union Tennessee. The use of C. S. in the address identifying Tennessee as a Confederate State is not correct as Tennessee did not secede until 8 JUN 1861 and did not join the CSA until 2 JUL 1861. Routing instruction at the lower left "via Montgomery, Alabama" suggests that the cover originated somewhere outside Montgomery and was carried into Montgomery for posting. Could be an unmarked "Way" cover but impossible to know without an enclosure. Very light water edge stain top right with a little scuff to the surface of the cover not affecting anything, otherwise a very clean appearing cover and a key date in Confederate philately. Ex-H.
