AL536 CSA #59xu1 Montgomery, Ala PAID 5 Provisional (T. Welsh PAID 5 mark in red) with the Montgomery, Ala CDS 5 SEP 1861. Addressed to Genl Daniel Ruggles, Pensacola, Florida. Daniel Ruggles (1810-1897) commanded briefly in Pensacola before going to New Orleans in early 1862 where he organized a brigade. He competently commanded a division at Corinth (Miss) in 1862. But afterwards his duties were administrative commanding departments and districts. He later became the Commissary General of Prisoners in March 1865 after the death of Gen Winder. Gen Ruggles was Massachusettes born but married into a Virginia family and made Fredericksburg his home and is buried there. Very Fine cover. Ex-Finney, Ex-Peters, Ex-Powell. $1,000.00
