Use (outside) CSA #12 (KB)
(4-Margin with a little edge gum toning) pen-cancelled with no postal
markings to The Rev J. H. Cornish, Aiken SC. Period docketing at left
“Summons to the Council Recd April 17th 1865.” The original enclosure
is with the second use at dates the cover to Unionville SC April 8th
1865 which is the day before Lee’s surrender. The enclosure announces
the meeting of the Diocesan Council (Episcopal) at Camden on May 24th
next and is signed by Revd McCollough as the secretary. John DeWitt
McCollough (1824-1900) at the beginning of the war served as the
Chaplain of Holcombe’s South Carolina Legion. Very coarse paper
homemade type adversity cover with very late useage from Unionville
(now known as Union) the court house of Union County SC in mid April
1865. This part of northwest South Carolina was still under Confederate
control at that time. Cover has been flapped up from the lower right
corner to display both stamps. Very Fine. |
