CSA #62x3 5c Brown New Orleans Provisional on White
Paper Vert Strip of 3 USED Plated as Positions 3, 11, 19 (4-Margin with
small part of the imprint visible at the top) on small piece with three strikes
of the “PAID” cancel and a bold and complete strike of the New Orleans,
La CDS 9 AUG (1861). This piece was once part of a full cover with a
fourth single stamp addressed to Hamburg SC (20c rate). But the 4th single
stamp on the cover was a replacement and was not original to the cover.
Therefore, the replaced stamp was removed and the cover converted to a
large piece in order to preserve the used strip as used multiples higher than a
pair of the New Orleans provisional stamps are very scarce. Accompanying
this piece is a 2006 CSA certificate for the full cover showing this strip with
the replaced stamp. The certificate also notes that the strip was lifted,
the bottom stamp expertly repaired, and the strip replaced. The repair to the
bottom stamp of the strip is so minor and so expertly done that it is almost
undetectable. Truly a showpiece item as these used larger multiples are so
extremely scarce.
