CSA #4 Stone 2 Plated as Position
8 (4-Margin but close on the left and with a little edge
gum toning) tied to a small piece by the Camp Shenandoah, Va Army Field
Postmark
13 APR (1862). This army post office about 20 miles west of
Staunton,
Va was established only for a very brief period of service.
The known
examples of this postmark and a manuscript postal marking only date
between 11 and 16 APR 1862. The post office was established
in early
April 1862 and ceased to exist when the army abandoned Camp Shendandoah
on 20 APR 1862. This stamp is directly from Conrad Bush’s
exhibit and
is still mounted on the exhibit card. The stamp and the piece
contain
about 80% of the postmark. The very top of the postmark has
been
reconstructed for display purposes. This stamp can be found
used as an
illustration on Page 26 of Conrad Bush’s book on fancy and unusual
cancels. Extremely scarce army field postmark.
