MANUSCRIPT CSA POSTAL MARKS

13 - STARS ***

Late Patriotic Cover which illustrates the New National Flag adopted 1 MAY 1863. This flag replaced the STARS AND BARS. Known as the SALTIRE FLAG, the JACKSON FLAG, or the STAINLESS BANNER, this was the flag that draped the coffin of Stonewall Jackson at his funeral.

Manuscript "Paid 10" at upper right. No other postal markings. Town of origin not apparent but delivered to Sumpter SC. Date must be after 1 MAY 1863 to correspond with the flag design. Therefore, this represents the single uniform 10c rate that went into effect 1 JUL 1862.
