CWPS CONVENTION
St. Louis, Missouri
22 - 24 MAR 2024

The 2024 Civil War Philatelic Society Convention was held 22-24 MAR 2024 in St. Louis, Missouri, in conjunction with the St. Louis Stamp Expo 2024. The Society CWPS Dinner was held Friday 22 MAR 2024 at the Kreis Steakhouse with approximately 30 members and guests in attendance including a joint dinner with members of the American Revenue Society. CWPS President Dan Knowles presiding. Thanks go to the convention host, Jerry Palazolo, who was responsible for coordinating the event.

The following awards were presented:

  • The CWPS Trophy presented to Randy Smith. 
  • The Haydn Myer Award for Service was presented posthumously to Randy Neil.
  • The August Dietz Award was presented to Patricia A. Kaufmann for her article "Ogden Handcrafted Confederate Provisional Forgeries" with an extensive census of these forgeries requiring a significant amount of research. Published in Vol. 68 No. 2 of the Civil War Philatelist (Second Quarter 2023.)  
  • The CWP Writers Award was presented to two authors for separate articles: 
    • Tom Lera for his article "Rebel Archives New Discoveries: Jefferson Davis Covers and Dupree's Old Store" (CWP 4th Quarter 2023).
    • John Miller for his article "Delisting of Camp Shenandoah as an Army Field Cancel - A Dissenting Opinion" (CWP 3rd Quarter 2023).
Exhibits and Awards:
  • "Coping with Adversity: How Southerners Adapted to Wartime Paper Shortages" by Randy Smith  -- CWPS Trophy, APS Gold, AAPE Creativity Award.
  • "The U.S. 1847 Issue: America's First Stamps" (not Civil War) by Daniel Ryterband -- APS Large Gold and Grand Award, U.S. Stamp Society Statue of Freedon Award.
  • "Day of Infamy: Pearl Harbor and the U.S. Pacific Fleet" (not Civil War) by Daniel Ryterband -- APS Large Vermeil, American Philatelic Congress Award.
  • "Re-Federalization of Confederate Post Offices 1862-1869" by Dan Telep -- CWPS General's Award, APS Large Vermeil, Postal History Society Award.
  • "Trans-Mississippi Express Mail Services by the Confederate States of America Post Office Department and Private Individuals During the American Civil War" (one frame) by Dan Knowles --  CWPS Conrad L. Bush Memorial Award for best one-frame exhibit, APS Large Gold and One Frame Grand Award.
  • "United States Demonitization and Transition to the 1861 Design Stamps" (one frame) by Dan Knowles --  CWPS Robert A. Siegel Memorial Award, APS Large Gold.
  • "Western Virginia: A Period of Turmoil and Unrest" (one frame) by Wayne Farley -- CWPS Society Research Trophy, APS Gold.
  • "Arkansas Postal Operations: 1861-1865" (one frame) by Rodney Kelley. CWPS General's Award, APS Large Vermeil.
  • "The American Civil War: Adversity Uses" (one frame) by Daniel Ryterband. CWPS Robert A. Siegel Memorial Award, APS Large Vermeil, AAPE Gold Award of Honor.

The Annual General Membership Business Meeting was held Saturday 23 MAR 2024 with President Daniel Knowles MD presiding. The Society continues strong financially. Membership is stable. The 2025 convention was announed and will be held at the Garfield-Perry Show in Cleveland, Ohio in March 2025 with details to follow. A summary of the Trustee's Meeting and the General Membership meeting will be published in the next issue of the Civil War Philatelist in accordance with the By-Laws.
