CSA CONVENTION
CHARPEX 2008 25-27 JUL 2008


2 AUG 2008 -- The 2008 CONFEDERATE STAMP ALLIANCE Convention was held 25-27 JUL 2007 in Charlotte NC in conjunction with the CHARPEX 2008 show.  The 63rd Southern Supper was held Friday 25 JUL 2008 at the Hilton Doubletree Hotel which served a wonderful southern meal family style. Many thanks to Schuyler Rumsey Auctions for supplying a souvenir tote bag to all members in attendance, to Siegel Auction Galleries for sponsoring the open bar during the social hour preceding the banquet, and to Phil Warman and John L. Kimbrough MD for sponsoring the traditional CSA Hospitality Room during the convention. Special thanks to Tony Crumbley who made all the major convention arrangements and acted as the convention host. CSA President Trish Kaufmann presided at the Southern Supper. The following awards were presented:

  • The CSA Trophy was presented to Col Galen Harrison for his exhibit "Prisoners' Mail from Dixie, An In Depth Look."
  • The Haydn-Meyer Award for Service was presented to Gen Ron Tate.
  • The CP Writer's Award was presented to Col William S. Parks for his article "Corinth Postmaster Followed CSA Army to Tupelo, Miss."
  • The August Dietz Award for research and publishing was presented to Col Warren Sanders and Col Erin Gunter for their work on the Post Offices, Postmasters, and Postmarks of the Trans-Mississippi Department.
  • James Monroe, immediate past president, was elevated to the honorary rank of "General."

CSA members exhibited a fabulous range of CSA material at the show and received the following awards:

  • "Straightline, Fancy & Uncommon Cancels on Confederate General Issue Stamps" - Conrad L. Bush -- CSA Jack E. Molesworth Memorial Award, APS Research Award, and Gold Medal.
  • "Prisoners' Mail from Dixie, an In Depth Look" - Galen Harrison - CSA Trophy, Show Grand Award, and Gold Medal.
  • "Columbus, Georgia in the Confederacy" - Francis J. Crown Jr - CSA William G. Bogg Memorial Award and Vermeil Medal.
  • Independent State and Confederate Mail of North Carolina" - Tony Crumbley - CSA John H. Reagan Award, APS Pre-1900 Award, and Gold Medal.
  • "Confederate States of America - the 5c Lithographs" - Ron Tate - Robert A. Siegel Memorial Award and Gold Medal.
  • "The 10-cent Steel Plate Issues of the Confederate States of America" - Randy L. Neil - CSA General's Award and Gold Medal.
  • "Arkansas Postal History 1861-1865" - Bruce Roberts - CSA Raymond and Roger Weil Memorial Award and Vermeil Medal.
  • "Crossing the Borders of the Confederacy" (one frame) - Rex Felton - CSA Trustees Award, Show One Frame Grand Award, and Gold Medal.

The Annual General Membership Business Meeting was held Saturday 26 JUL 2008 with President Trish Kaufmann presiding. The Alliance is strong financially, and the newly established Endowment Fund has already reached over 50% of its goal in donations and pledges. Work on the new Confederate States Catalog is progressing, and the target date for publication remains the summer of 2010. Sites of future meetings and conventions were announced with details to follow as they become available. The full report of the General Membership Meeting will appear in the next issue of the Confederate Philatelist in accordance with the By-Laws.
