CWPS CONVENTION

9 SEP 2022 -- The 2022 Civil War Philatelic Society (CSA) Convention was held 2-4 SEP 2022 in Baltimore, Maryland, in conjunction with the BALPEX 2022 show. The Society Dinner (Southenr Supper) was held Saturday 3 SEP 2022 at the Barrett's Grill restaurant with 31 members and guests in attendance and with President Mike O'Reilly presiding. Thanks go to the convention host, Randy Smith, who planned and coordinated the entire event.

The following awards were presented:

  • The CWPS (CSA) Trophy was presented to Leonard Hartmann. 
  • The Haydn Myer Award for Service was not presented.
  • The August Dietz Award was presented to Patricia A. Kaufmann for her research and articles in the Society Journal on the Jenkins Express (a new listing) and her subsequent Power Point presentation on the same topic to the Collector's Club of New York. The presentation can be viewed on the CWPS website.
  • The CWP (CP) Writers Award was presented to Daniel Knowles MD for his article The Pioneer Express Company: Its History and a Cover Census (CWP 3rd Quarter 2021).

  • "Confederate Military Mail -- Chattanooga 1862-1864" (one frame) by James Cate -- CWPS Conrad L. Bush Memorial Award, APS Large Gold, American Philatelic Congress Award.
  • "U.S. Domestically Mailed Circulars from 1845-1863" (one frame) by Scott Steward -- CWPS President's Award, APS Gold, Erie Philatelic Association Award Best Gold Single Frame Award.
  • "Huntsville, Alabama, Confederate postal History" (one frame) by Mike O'Reilly -- CWPS Robert A. Siegel Memorial Award, APS Vermeil.
  • "Harpers Ferry -- The Civil War Era" (one frame) by Wayne Farley -- CWPS Jack E. Molesworth Memorial Award, APS Large Gold, APS Research Medal.
  • "CSA 2c Rates and Fees" (one frame) by Clifford Alexander -- CEPS Generals Award, APS Large Gold.
  • "The American Civil War: The Anaconda Plan" by Daniel Ryterband -- CWPS Trustees' Research Trophy, APS Large Gold, APS Pre-1900 Medal of Excellence.
  • "Richmond, VA, thru 1865. An AD Cover Study of its Commerce" by Larry Baum -- CWPS Robert A. Siegel Memorial Award, APS Gold.

The Annual General Membership Business Meeting was held Saturday 3 SEP 2022 with President Mike O'Reilly presiding. The Society continues strong financially. Sites of possible future meetings and conventions were announced with details to follow as they become available. A summary of the Trustee's Meeting and the General Membership meeting will be published in the next issue of The Civil War Philatelist in accordance with the By-Laws.
