Asheville Mid-Year Gathering
29-31 OCT 2004

1 NOV 2004 -- During the weekend of 29-31 OCT 2004, the Confederate Stamp Alliance returned to Cold Mountain. Seventy Confederate Stamp Alliance Members and Guests (the largest attendance of a mid-year event to date) gathered together in Asheville, North Carolina near the site of the original Cold Mountain for the traditional annual Confederate Philatelic Weekend. Tony Crumbley, the host for the event along with Richard Canupp and Vernon Stroupe, put together an excellent program for the members in attendance. The meeting and trading room was active the entire time with collectors and dealers exchanging stamps, covers, and more importantly sharing their collections and knowledge with the other members. The traditional CSA Hospitality Room was also well utilized during the afternoon and evening hours, and also into the early morning hours.

Formal Presentations included --

  • "North Carolina Provisionals 1861-1865 by Tony Crumbley who demonstrated by slide show the known North Carolina provisional covers.
  • "The Postal History of Arkansas 1861-1865 by Bruce Roberts who took us through his award winning exhibit of Arkansas Postal History.
  • "Fakes of the Confederate Postmaster Provisional Adhesives" by Peter Powell and Kevin Baker which included hands on examinations and a good test of knowledge of the old fakes as well as presenting some of the more recently discovered fakes. This is part of a larger work-in-progress which will be published perhaps a few years down the road, but each attendee was given a summary booklet with the fake provisional information discussed in the presentation.

This year a Southern Supper style banquet was held for the members and guests. The dinner speaker was Terrell T. Gerren, a Western North Carolina historian and author, whose topic was "The Secret of War Visits Cold Mountain."

CSA Generals in attendance were Gen Brian Green, Gen Tony Crumbley, Gen Jerry Palazolo, Gen Patricia Kaufmann, Gen Peter Powell, Gen Roger Oswald, Gen Ron Tate. Peter Powell had the distinction of being the senior member present with the lowest member number (796). The youngest member present was Junior Member Alexander Green (age 9). And the member who traveled the furthest to attend was John Church and his wife Eileen from Leeds, England.

Special thanks go to the following dealers in attendance who helped to underwrite the cost of the event -- Tony Crumbley, Charles Hanselmann, John Kimbrough, Stanley Piller, James Taff, Phil Warman, Elizabeth Pope representing Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries who sponsored the social hour prior to the banquet, and Schuyler Rumsey of Schuyler Rumsey Auctions who sponsored the table wine at the banquet. Another special thanks to those unnamed who provided for the pizza lunches on Friday and Saturday.
