CSA #4 Stone 2 (touches at left and cut into a bit at the
top) tied by the Richmond, Va CDS with a MAY 1862 date. Addressed in
light pencil to Mrs. Wm Gray Care of Wm Gray Esqr Richmond, Va
making this an Overpaid Drop Letter. Period pencil notation on the face of
the cover reads “Army in the Woods.” Cover was most likely hand-carried
into Richmond from the Army and then “dropped.” Excellent usage from
the well-known and extensive William Gray Correspondence. Just a little
light soiling but still a very attractive cover.
