CDS 20 OCT (1863). Addressed to Dr. Archer Assistant Surgeon,
Montgomery White Sulpher Springs, Virginia. Montgomery White Sulphur
Springs (as distinct from White Sulphur Springs in Greenbrier County
West Virginia) was the site of a large Confederate soldiers hospital in
Montgomery County near Christiansburg Period receiving docketing on the
reversedates the cover to 1863 and identifies the sender as Col Rust.
Missing top back flap and several sealed top edge tears. Very clean
appearance with a very nice red postmark. Ex-Finney.
Armistead Thomson Mason Rust (1820-1887), an 1842 West Point Graduate and a farmer from Leesburg, Va, was Colonel of the 19th Va Inf but was dropped during the April 1862 re-organization. Later in the war, he served as a Judge Advocate under CSA General Samuel Jones who at the time of this cover was in command of the Military Department of Western Virginia.
