Coarse brown paper cover with full Military Address to Brig Gen Geo. H. Steuart Comdg 3rd Brigade, Johnson's Division, Ewell's Corps, Army N. Va. Manuscript "Private" at upper left. The sender is not identified. Very Fine.
George Hume Steuart (1828-1903), a Maryland planter and West Point graduate, sided with the Confederacy and was Colonel of the 1st Maryland Infantry (CSA) prior to promotion as Brig-Gen 3/6/1862. He was seriously wounded at Cross Keys 6/8/1862 during Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign but recovered and led a brigade at Gettysburg. Gen Steuart was captured as a POW with most of his division at the "Mule Shoe" at Spotsylvania CH 5/12/1864 and exchanged a few months later. He was with Lee at the surrender at Appomattox. After the war, he went back to farming in Maryland and served for many years as the commander of the Maryland Division United Confederate Veterans.
