VA3002 Stampless cover with theTudor Hall, Va CDS 24 AUG 1861. Orange paper cover addressed to Mr. James Chalmers, Lynchburg, Va. On arrival in Lynchburg, the cover was forwarded to Liberty, Bedford County, Va and the Lynchburg, Va CDS applied 26 AUG 1861. The odd thing about the cover is that there are no PAID or DUE marks and no rates noted not even for the forwarding. Since the cover originated from Tudor Hall, one can assume it was most likely sent by a soldier who was perhaps a relative of the addressee. Since there is no endorsement, the cover was presumably sent PAID and the postmaster neglected to properly mark the cover. Searching the records, there was a James Chalmers (1829-1861) from Lynchburg, Va who enlisted as a Sergt in Co B 2nd Va Cav on 5/13/1861. This is most likely the same person as the addressee as Sergt Chalmers may have been home on furlough at the time. Sergt Chalmers is listed as wounded at Munson's Hill (Va) 9/29/1861 (left arm amputated) and died of his wounds 10/1/1861 and is buried at the Presbyterian Cemetery in Lynchburg. There is no enclosure, so the reason for the forwarding and no charge for the forwarding are  unclear. Cover very slightly reduced at the right. Minor light foxing. $250.00
