VA2975 Stampless Soldiers Due cover with two strikes of the BLUE small double circle Norfolk, Va CDS 3 JAN 1861 and matching BLUE handstamp (Due) 10 Type J. Endorsed at upper left "Private E. Fowler, La Guards Artillery, Capt C. E. Girardey." Addressed trans-Mississippi to Mrs. H. W. Fowler Care of Dan Hicky Esq., Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Private Eugene Fowler enlisted in Co C La Guard Light Artillery 7/21/1861. Private Fowler was reportedly killed in Virginia during skirmishing 8/22/1862. The unit immediately went to Norfolk, Virginia and served throughout the war in northern Virginia. Capt Camille E. Girardey (1830-1889) mentioned in the endorsement, served with distinction throughout the war. Very Fine. $200.00
