VA2962 CSA #6 Horz Pair (margin a little close on the right) tied by a partial strike of the Richmond, Va CDS (date not fully apparent). Adversity Cover made from a printed business form letter displayed flapped down from the top left. Addressed to Mrs. Richard Irby, Blacks & Whites, Nottoway Co., Va. Richard Irby (1825-1902) was a wealthy plantation owner from a prominent Nottoway County family who had service as 1st Lieut and later Captain of Co G 18th Va Inf beginning in April 1861. He is listed as wounded at 2nd Manassas 8/30/1862 but served throughout the war and was paroled 4/19/1865. This cover was very likely sent by Capt Irby home to his wife. Very clean cover with a notation on the reverse by VanDyk MacBride. $200.00
