VA2924 CSA #1 Stone 1 (not plated) (small clip to the right lower corner, minor pre-affixing faults, edge gum stains) tied by the Tudor Hall, Va CDS 21 NOV 1861. Addressed to Mrs. Mary V. Withers. Most of the mail going through Tudor Hall at this time was army related. The cover was sent by Colonel Robert E. Withers home to his wife. Robert Enoch Withers (1821-1907), a Danville physician, was the Colonel of the 18th Va Inf beginning in May 1861.He was badly wounded at Gaines Mill (Va) 6/27/1862 which ended his field service. After recovering, he served as the military post commander at Danville until the end of the war. After the war, he served as a US Congressman from Virginia in the 1870's and as US Consul to Hong Kong in the 1880's. Very clean cover. $175.00
