||CSA #4 Horz Pair (probably Stone 2 but not plated) (margins in to tight on all sides) tied by the Salem, Va CDS 13 JUL (1862). Railroad Advertising Cover with the stamps affixed over a boxed printed corner card "TO BE USED ONLY ON VIRGINIA AND TENNESSEE Railroad's Business, Lynchburg, Va."
The cover was not used on official railroad business as the stamps
covered the corner card but have been lifted and moved down so the
corner card can be displayed. Addressed to C. Y. Thomas Esq,
Martinsville, Henry Co., Va.As a state senator, C.
Y. Thomas was against secession and tried to keep Virginia in the Union. In
spite of this, he served during the war as the Virginia Commonwealth
Attorney and was an agent for the distribution of supplies to needy
familes of Confederate soldiers. Small part of backflap missing. Very clean cover. ||$600.00|
