VA2715 Handstamp PAID 5 Type B with the Lexington, Va CDS all in BLUE 2 DEC (1861). Advertising Cover with an overall greenish color and an advertising oval at upper left "Greenlee Davidson Attorney at Law, Lexington, Va." Addressed to Mrs. J. D. Davidson, Care Mason Matthews Esq, Lewisburg, (West) Virginia. Greenlee Davidson (1834-1863) was from a prominent Virginia family. In 1861, he was serving as an ADC to Virginia CSA Governor John Letcher with the Virginia state rank of Lt Col of Cavalry. He later entered regular service as Captain of the Letcher Artillery in Stonewall Jackson’s corps and was killed-in-action at Chancellorsville in May 1863. The advertising cover is from the addressee's law practice office in Lexington. The addressee was Greenlee Davidson's mother, Mrs. James Dorman Davidson (Hannah Greenlee 1812-1889). The sender of the cover is not identified. Backflap opening tears with part of the "Anthony & Co" imprint visible. Sealed edge tears at left into the advertising and at the upper left. Ex-Bogg. This cover has two certificates. CSA Certificate 1994 "No Opinion" on provisional status. PSE Certificate 1996 (Frajola, Molesworth, Green) states that it is a genuine Handstamp PAID 5 and not a provisional. Green most likely was outvoted on the PSE Certificate as he clearly believes these covers to be provisional uses and has a written note on the back of this cover. This cover very pointedly illustrates the difference of opinion on the Lexington stampless markings. $400.00
