Address locally to Brig Genl Wms C. Wickham, Wickham’s Brigade,
Charlottesville (Va). Overpaid Drop Letter.
Light coarse paper cover which appears
to be homemade. Cover has a little minor period staining but overall
still has a very clean appearance. Not a commonly seen drop letter use
addressed to a distinguished Confederate general.
Williams Carter Wickham (1820-1888), already a prominent lawyer and political figure from Hanover County, entered service as Lt Col and then Colonel of the 4th Va Cav. He was promoted Brig-Gen in September 1863. Gen Wickham served with distinction during the war and was wounded twice (Williamsburg 5/4/1862 and Sharpsburg 9/16/1862). He was elected to the Confederate Congress and resigned from the army in late 1864 to take his seat in Congress. After the war, he had a distinguished political career and was also involved with various railroads.
