Adversity Cover made from a printed but unused railroad freight form displayed with the left upper corner flapped down. Addressed to Mrs. J. Adger Smyth, Wrights Bluff, Clarendon, So. Ca. Endorsed at upper right “J. A. Smyth 25th Regt SCV.” Very clean cover.

James Adger Smyth (1837-1920) was a Quartermaster Sergeant in Company A 25th SC Inf for the duration of the war. After the war, he was a successful merchant and cotton factor and was also active in local politics serving as the Mayor of Charleston for two terms (1895-1903).
