VA2340 CSA #13 (4-Margin but cut a little close at the bottom right) tied by the usual weak but recognizable strike of the RED Petersburg, Va CDS with a SEP 1864 date. The cover is very clearly a homemade adversity cover made from very heavy coarse brown paper. Addressed to William L. Owen Esqr, Black Walnut PO, Halifax County, Va. The addressee was a wealthy merchant and planter in Halifax County who had a son, Thomas Easley Owen (1848-1865) who was a Pvt in the Va 1st Rockbridge Light Artllery. This was an ANV unit present at the Siege of Petersburg. Cover was very likely sent by Pvt Owen home to his father. Pvt Owen was captured as a POW at the Siege of Petersburg (date not recorded) and confined at Point Lookout Prison where he died of disease in June 1865. Pvt Owen is buried in the Point Lookout Cemetery. Very clean cover from the Siege of Petersburg. This stamp with a red postmark is not commonly seen. $650.00
