CSA #12 (AD) (4-Margin) Pen-Cancel and manuscript “Scottsburg, Va 8th
Oct 1864” at the left. Coarse brown paper cover which appears to be a
homemade adversity cover addressed to Dr. Tomlin Braxton, Winder
Hospital, Richmond, Va. Tomlin Braxton (b1832 and an 1854 graduate of
the Univ of Pa Medical School) was the Asst Surgeon 7/1/1861 of the 19th
Va Inf. He was captured as a POW in the Kanawha District in West
Virginia in early 1862 and confined for a short time at Camp Chase, Ohio
before being released. On 10/3/1862, he was promoted Surgeon and later
took up duties at the Winder Military Hospital in Richmond. Very clean
cover with just a little edge wear.
