VA1741 CSA #11c Vert Pair (4-Margin Greenish-Blue and affixed sideways) tied by the Richmond, Va CDS Powell Type 5f 1 JAN (1864) (New Years Day Cover). Light coarse paper cover addressed to Mrs. Capt J. J. Allen, Waskey’s Mills Botetourt Co., Va. John James Allen (b1831) enlisted as a private in Co K 57th Va Inf 6/10/1861 and was promoted Capt 7/20/1861. He was wounded at Malvern Hill 7/1/1862 losing an arm. He resigned 8/23/1862 on account of his wound. After the war, he was a lawyer, judge, and a legislator for Botetourt County. Very Fine double rate cover. $250.00
