| VA1737 | Turned Cover -- 1st Use (inside): CSA #2 Paterson (Pos 1 stamp with small sheet margins left and top but just in at the bottom) tied by the Richmond, Va CDS Powell Type 3f 6 NOV 1862 to Mount Crawford, Va. 2nd Use (outside): Handstamp Due 10 with the Culpeper CH, Va CDS Dietz Type I 22 MAR (1863) but no soldier’s endorsement and addressed to Miss M. E. Grattan, Mt Crawford Rockingham, Va. The cover is from a known correspondence, and the second use was sent by Peter Grattan 1st Va Cav to his sister. There were two other brothers (Robert and George Grattan) in the same regiment. Peter Grattan was wounded at Spotsylvania Court House, Va 5/7/1864 and died of his wounds two days later. The family letters are in the archives at the University of North Carolina. Very clean appearing orange paper cover (minor repairs only to the backflap) with the lower right corner flapped up to display the stamp from the inside usage. | $300.00 |
