VA1680 Handstamp PAID 2 Drop Letter with the Richmond, Va CDS Dietz Type I. Very coarse paper homemade adversity cover with Military Address to Dr. Armistead R. Mott Care of Maj Gen D. H. Hill, Richmond, Virgina. The addressee was the Chief Surgeon on the staff of Gen D. H. Hill and held the rank of Major. Over the Richmond postmark is the outline of gum showing that a stamp had been applied probably by mistake over the postmark and then removed. On examination, the postmark is clearly under the residual of the remaining gum left behind. There was no need for a stamp as the “PAID 2” mark indicated full payment for the drop letter usage. Few minor edge faults and a little light foxing but a scarce PAID 2 drop letter handstamp usage on a very presentable cover. $500.00
