VA1587 CSA #4 Stone 2 and CSA #6 Used on Combination to make the 10c rate. Both stamps are pen-canceled and on the back used to seal the backflap but were not damaged in opening. Manuscript on the front of the cover “Afton, Va Aug 21st (1862) stamps on back.” The “stamps on back” notation was made by the Afton postmaster to note that the postage had been paid. Light brown coarse paper cover (probably homemade) with a Military Address to Mr. James A. Pannel in the Care of Capt Marmaduke Johnson Richmond, Va Light Artillery. The Richmond “Johnson” Va Light Artillery Battery was an Army of Northern Virginia Artillery Unit. Afton, Va was a stop on the Virginia Central Railaroad. Very clean cover only slightly reduced on the left not affecting anything and showing interesting combination usage. $300.00
