TN234 Soldiers Handstamp Due 10 with the Chattanooga, Ten CDS Dietz Type I 9 DEC (1863). This is an army “Rover” usage of the Chattanooga postmark as Chattanooga fell to the Union 9/9/1863. Endorsed at lower left “Privet in Co H 37th Regt Georgia Vol” and addressed to Mrs. M. A. McCorkle, Washington Wilkes Co, Geo. Wallpaper adversity cover with an elaborate floral pattern in dark red, brown, cream, and gray displayed very nicely with two flaps folded over. Cover was sent by Private John McCorkle to his mother. Private McCorkle enlisted in Co H 37th Ga Inf (an Army of Tennessee unit that was not formed until August 1863) 8/10/1863 and was captured as a POW at Nashville 12/16/1864. He died of pneumonia while a POW at Camp Douglas in Chicago 2/6/1865. One missing backflap, otherwise Very Fine. Ex-Boshwit. $1,250.00
