USA #U10 Postal Stationery Pen-Cancel with manuscript “Kimsey’s Store, Ten 8 JUN 1861” Tennessee Independent State. Addressed to James Whitaker, Valley Town, Cherokee County NC. Tennessee had not as yet joined the CSA, so cover went from Independent Tennessee to CSA North Carolina after the Confederate Postal Service began operations. And it went for the Union 3c rate. Should have been assessed postage due for the CSA rate. But owing to the confusion of the times, was simply allowed to go through. Backflap missing and edge opening fault at top center.
