| RT16 | Handstamp “FREE” with the Savannah, Ga CDS 4 MAR 1861 USA Used in the CSA. Addressed to David Walton PM, London Grove PO Chester County, Pa. The orignal letter is still with the cover. The letter was written and sent by the addressee to himself. David Walton was traveling in the South and wrote this lengthy letter home to his children to tell them about his trip. The letter begins in Enterprise, Fla and picks up again in Savannah, Ga. The letter is entirely personal and therefore clearly represents an abuse of the postmaster free franking privilege by sending a personal family letter addressed to himself as postmaster. Cover shows just a little edge wear right and left, but is otherwise Very Fine and demonstrates a not commonly seen Confederate period Free use to the North. | SOLD |
