#30A Horz Pair (very nice stamps affixed upside
down but with part of the imprint at the left) on a Trans-Atlantic
Cover
New Orleans, La to Spain via New York 4 MAR 1861 USA Used
in the
CSA. Folded letter complete in Spanish which originated
in New Orleans. The stamps are tied by two partial strikes of the New
Orleans, La CDS 4
MAR 1861. The cover arrived in New York where the red New
York Br.
Pkt mark was applied 13 MAR 1861. The British Packet “Adriatic”
of the
Cunard Line carried this cover and sailed on that date arriving in
Queenstown 23 MAR 1861. Cover then delivered on its way to Spain with a
London transit mark on the back 25 MAR 1861 plus two Spanish receiving
marks dated 27 and 29 MAR 1861. Large “12 Rs” handstamp on the face of
the cover is a Spanish mark and represents either a foreign
debit/credit mark
or perhaps postage due on delivery. A truly spectacular cover.
