SC1140 CSA #4 (two 4-Margin singles paying the 10c rate over 500 miles). The stamps show an extremely dry printing and come from the same sheet. The left stamp is Stone 2 Position 36, and the right stamp is Stone 2 Position 37. The stamps are pen-cancelled, and the matching postal manuscript "Zeno SC York District April 14th (1862)" is at the top center. Addressed to Mrs. Mary Wood, Raleigh PO, Smith County, Mississippi. At bottom right in the same hand as the address is what appears to be "howdy Mary." At first glance, the cover appears to be a folded letter, but it is not. This is an Adversity Cover made from blue lined letter paper which was used in 1860 with a short business letter with a printed letterhead for "Wm M. Lawton & Co., Charleston, S.C." and is dated 31 Aug 1860. Very interesting and a very clean Adversity Cover. $450.00
